Doug, Here is an idea that is win-win. Negotiate a deal with theatres to record their plays, e.g. Behanding in Spokane with Christopher Walken, and pay them for the privilege (they win) and you have the right to broadcast it on HBO one or more times (you win). They also receive free advertising if they agree to allow you to broadcast it during the theatre run. The Huntington Theatre in Boston might be interested. HBO also benefits by showing a cultural event that might result in new subscriptions.
