After more than 17 months of government scrutiny, the merger between Sirius Satellite Radio was finalized. The newly formed company announced that going forward, it will use the moniker Sirius XM Radio. In a press release, the firm revealed that it is kicking off day one with more than 18.5 million subscribers, making Sirius XM the second-largest radio company in the U.S.

This is great news for me because I absolutely love satellite radio whether XM or Sirius. But what really caught my attention was their combined subscriber numbers. While fairly impressive, I felt it Interesting to note that podcasting reached 18.5 million LAST YEAR! Additionally, the industry is expected to grow 87% YOY bringing podcasting numbers to nearly 35 million for 2008! Not to mention this growth happened without billions of dollars of infrastructure costs, multi-million dollar talent contracts, deals for distribution in vehicles, etc. Additionally, podcasting is a far more rich media experience because it offers not just audio, but video, text, PDF’s, essentially any digital media file you choose. Add to that fact that more and more cars are being manufactured with MP3 / iPod docks, along with a host of other opportunities for digital media to be consumed both in the vehicle and out… seamlessly! Ok, Ok, I’ll stop pitching. I’m just fired up.

Congrats to both companies!
